Itchy Eyes

With Easter comes blooms and pollen and itchy, watery, runny eyes. Seasonal Allergies are part of the Oklahoma Experience with upwards of 60% experience problems to varying degrees. These symptoms brings patients suffering with these reactions into eye care offices across the region.

Contact lens patients are particularly hard hit by these allergic reactions. Often they find them unable to wear their contact lenses or wear them with some discomfort and blur. Ocular symptoms are often itch, blurred vision, watery eyes, slight mucoid discharge, coated contact lenses, light sensitivity, redness, and even localized “hot to the touch” sensation to a foreign body sensation.

It is important to be evaluated by an optometrist because bacterial conjunctivitis, viral conjunctivitis (pink-eye), rhinitis, Dry Eye Syndrome and Blepharitis can all present similar to allergic conjunctivitis. It is also important to determine the severity of the condition to initiate the proper level of treatment. Treatments can include:

  • Cold packs/compresses
  • OTC antihistamines
  • Prescription antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers
  • topical steroids
  • orals
  • immunomodulators

Early treatment is best to reduce the effects of the degranulated mast cells thus making allergy season more tolerable.
